This hand-crafted garment is the result of a meaningful collaboration between Saheli women in rural Rajasthan and the Shastra Society women from a small Himalayan village in Himachal Pradesh, India.
Together, they wove the fabric by hand, featuring either intricate striped patterns or traditional "kingri" friezes—a signature element of Kullu and Pattu shawls, beloved in the region. These long shawls are typically draped and pinned at the chest, reflecting a deep-rooted cultural tradition.
This is the first weaving project for the women of Shastra Society, an NGO previously focused on educational efforts like establishing a boys’ school. The initiative has generated immense excitement among the women, as it offers a new way to connect with and preserve their heritage.
In this region, weaving has long been a women-led craft, practiced in the home—especially in the past when road access was limited.
We hope this piece brings you as much joy as it brought to the many hands and hearts that helped create it.
